There are many sources out there claiming that food is not the culprit when it comes to acne. Well, if you have had your own issues in the past – for instance, a break out every time you eat your favorite greasy food – you know that statement may not be completely accurate. Maybe your mom (or Grandma) was right when she said that the junk food you were eating , "would cause zits!"
Personally, I believe that food can be a contributing factor for some individuals. It would probably not be the only cause, but with the poor dietary habits of millions of people today, it is just common sense to assume that too much of the wrong type of food going into your body is bound to show up somewhere!
There is a theory among researchers at the RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, that diets (the conventional Western diet) which are high in refined sugars and processed foods – boosting insulin levels. The insulin can produce an overload in hormone levels, which stimulates an overproduction of oil and skin cells in pores. The clogged pores promote the bacteria that form in pimples.
Their study consisted of two groups of men between the ages of 15 and 25, where one group was given a high protein, low-glycemic diet (whole grains, lean meat, fish, veggies) and the other group ate from a diet of high glycemic foods (sugar and processed grains). After the 12 weeks, the group on the low-glycemic diet saw a 50% reduction in their facial acne. Ok, there’s yet another good reason for maintaining a well-balanced diet and limiting the amount of fast foods and sodas consumed.
Still, the American Medical Association says that chocolate does not cause acne.
Milk and other dairy products have come under fire as possible culprits due to the growth hormones present in cow’s milk – but the jury is still out on that one.
You could go absolutely mad if you listened to all of the so-called “experts” whose opinions change like the wind. What is good for you today – probably will not be tomorrow. The old and simple adage, “Moderation is the key” is one I use often and recommend again here. Where trouble or problems arise, you will usually find someone who was not up to the task.
