Blue Light Therapy for Acne
`
Blue light therapy is a well-known, FDA approved light therapy for treating mild to moderate acne. The blue light works by killing the acne-causing bacteria known as P.acnes.
In this treatment, a photosensitive gel is applied to the affected area of the skin, which is then exposed to the blue light source. Today’s blue light products do not contain any ultraviolet (UV) light, which has been known to cause skin damage. This type of therapy is also used to treat acne vulgaris, an inflammatory form of acne.
Several treatments are usually given over a four to six week period, followed by periodic treatments as needed. Each treatment session lasts approximately 15 minutes. Most people experience no discomfort during the treatment and require no recovery time. Afterwards some may compare the effects to a mild case of sunburn, minor swelling in the treated areas and some dryness. Blue light therapy has also been used to treat a number of other skin pigmentation conditions, such as rosacea, spider veins, some varicose veins and tattoos.
If you are considering blue light therapy and think that it may be the best acne treatment for you, consult with a doctor or dermatologist who specializes in this area of treatment. In fact, you might want to “shop around” for comparisons – ask plenty of questions, ask to see before and after pictures, and consider their recommendations for a treatment plan and anticipated outcome, before making your decision.
